Our origins date to 1917, when mining and logging companies in Tacoma approached local doctors for a strategy on affordable health care. Physicians formed the first pre-paid health plan in the United States, Pierce County Medical Bureau. After a series of local mergers, almost 90 years later, the resulting Regence BlueShield is one of the largest health plans in the state.
